When I was considering becoming Catholic from Baptist, but still had problems with the Church that needed solid answers, I came across a book called “By What Authority”, by Mark Shea. It was the perfect book for me during that time, and it crystallized for me many ideas that were in my mind about the inadequacy of Evangelical Protestantism.
I wholeheartedly recommend it to all cradle Catholics, so that they can learn more about the Evangelical perspective and problems they have with the Catholic Church, as well as for Catholics to give to their Evangelical friends to read, in particular those with friends who are thinking about the Catholic Church. I have given it to many people to read, including one die-hard Baptist who doesn’t think too well of the Catholic Church, and when he returned the book to me, he just kind of nodded his head like “Hmm, some pretty hard-to-argue with stuff in there”.
I suggest you try this link to Mark Shea’s books and tapes to order it.
He breaks the back of the sola scriptura (bible alone) argument and the main lines that Evangelicals try to use to “prove” that this recent invention is true. The cool thing is, he does it from the perspective of his own conversion, so he isn’t dictating or preaching why the Catholic Church is right, but rather explaining the thought process he was going through as an Evangelical and how he discovered that the Catholic faith was the fullness of what he already believed in.
