Last night, Brad and Misty Cey invited me and some friends over for a murder mystery dinner party. If you haven’t been to one (which I hadn’t), a “murder” is committed, and each person plays a particular character while trying to figure out who the murderer is.

The theme was a 60s/70s-era high school class reunion, and our friend Mark had the most outrageous costume I think:

It was neat because Mark and I were the only single people there, and the rest were married, so all the married couples brought their children! The Cey’s have a newborn girl named Clare and a two year old named Anna, and the juggled everything amazingly between taking care of their girls, cooking a big dinner (with three desserts!), and playing the part of their characters in the murder mystery.

The game consisted of several scenes where some evidence may be given, then your character would accuse another one of the crime, revealing some incriminating information about them. Then if you were accused, you would read your excuse explaining away the evidence. Only the murderer could actually lie and would need to mislead other people, so it was a game of figuring out who was lying as opposed to reading off the true defenses written on their cards.

The Higgins:

I played Marty Potts, a “high-powered businessman with a razor-sharp mind”. I had a lot of credible evidence against me, and so most of the people thought I was the murderer. After the third scene, we interrupted the game for a fine dinner of hamburgers and potato wedges, along with milk shakes.

Since we are all Catholics striving to follow Christ, lying does not come naturally to us, and when Adam said one of his defenses against an accusation, I noticed his face redden a bit (he’s already a fiery red-head), so I guessed he was the murderer, and I was right!

It was good fun to watch all the children playing and running around, and I ate all three desserts, including a delicious black forest cake that Misty made and her apple pie!
