One of the Devil’s greatest efforts is spent in convincing each person in the world that nothing is sacred.

When someone does start to think something is sacred, or if they already believe it is, he will attack that belief and attempt to persuade them that it really isn’t. For example, human life and human beings themselves are sacred because we are made in the image of the Holy Trinity.

Every person you see is a tiny but brilliant and beautiful manifestation of our Lord, and yet, what do we see when we look at each other? If you’re like me, you see the flaws, or you determine whether you think they are “pretty” or “ugly”, or you are guarded against them because they are a different color than you.

Another example is the relationships that men and women have together: friendship, courtship, engagement, and marriage. Our society and the Devil attack these relationships with unequaled ferocity and malice, trying (and often succeeding) in taking these holy relationships created by God and turning them into profane, lustful, and selfish disasters.

The antidote for such venom is the grace of our Lord and the teachings of His Church. With His help, we can learn what these relationships, especially marriage, were intended to be when God created them, and how we can fulfill His beautiful purpose in our lives.

When we grow in deeper appreciation of these gifts from God through studying, praying, and receiving the sacraments, we become more open to the Holy Spirit and how He desires us to live and act in our relationships, and we become more fully human, just as Jesus wants us to be. He came that we would have life, and have it more abundantly (John 10:10), and that blessed life is what He offers us everyday.

The Devil comes only to steal people’s virtue, to kill them, and to ultimately destroy them and nullify any good they can do. He perverts the good sexual desires given to men by God and works tirelessly to draw men into lustful sins. Satan knows that lust destroys love, and he is most afraid of a husband and wife who love each other in Christ, so he attacks them constantly.

When we start to believe this reality, we can wake up from our sleep and put on the armor of God each day to do battle against these evils. Our angels and our Lord will defend us from demons and evil people, but we have to prepare ourselves to enter the fight. So often we disbelieve that the spiritual battle is being fought everyday because we feel that our lives are really rather mundane–who would care about it? But this is the trick because God cares deeply about it and has given everything to win us for Heaven and save us from Hell.

Let us choose to cooperate with God and correspond to His grace, so that we might become the men and women he created us to be.
