When my girlfriend Katie came to the Kresses the first night of her visit, little 3-year-old Jane came running from the living room shouting, “Katie! Katie!” and promptly leaped into Katie’s arms. I was staring in amazed bemusement at her and then at Sharon and Jeff (Jane’s parents) as Jane doesn’t do this with anyone. Sharon looked equally dumbfounded and made an “I don’t know”-kind of gesture while smiling happily.

I didn’t prompt Jane to do it or tell her to; the only thing I said was that my girlfriend would be coming to visit soon and stay with them. I think Jane showed such love for Katie because she knew that this girl was very special to me.

So last night I went over to the Kresses after work, and Jane came out into the living room with a paper in her hand which she presented to me. It is a drawing that she made for me and Katie:

The letters at the bottom are “you and Katie’s names”, she said, and the drawing is of some type of nut or acorn I think. Blessed be God in his faithful little girls (both the 3-year-olds and the 26-year-olds!).

  1. Jane drew an acorn! :) Ohmigosh! Sunday morning, after breakfast at Taco Cabana, Jane and I were walking to Devin’s car, when we passed an oak tree. Jane picked up an acorn on the ground, and I explained that acorns are oak tree seeds, which will grow into oak trees if planted and watered. And, she remembered! I’m really touched by her beautiful child’s heart.
