Complementarity in the Classroom

Spring break begins today at 3:35p. Praise God! My students are ancy, exhausted and euphoric on the edge of a week free of school; they remind me of little children who are so tired that they’re hyper.

Second hour, the class finished their assignment early and earned free time. Beloved free time! [...]

Pope Benedict on Perpetual Adoration

Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, recently fielded questions from some of the priests in Rome, and the third question was about Perpetual Adoration. I thought his response was very inspiring:

My Sister in Burma

My sister was in Burma (Myanmar) for some time, and she sent us amazing pictures. The country has many spectacular Buddhist temples and much natural beauty, not to mention the good people created by God who live there.

I learned that Burma was under an isolationistic form of socialism for decades (1960s to 1980s) and [...]

Two Takes on “V” for Vendetta

I have not seen the movie “V” for Vendetta, but I have read two reviews on it, one by Steven Greydanus of decentfilms.com, and the other by Harry Forbes, the official movie reviewer for the United State Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

Interestingly, if I had just read Forbes’ USCCB review, I would have considered going [...]

Joyous Weekend

This post is just an excuse to put up a picture of my beloved girlfriend that her sister took of us over the weekend.

Believing in Jesus, Believing Jesus

A cousin of mine sends me an email with the Gospel reading everyday and a reflection. Today’s gospel (John 4, 43-54) talked about Jesus going back to Galilee and healing the son of a royal official who “believed in the word of Jesus.” The reflection pointed out that there are many Christians that believe in [...]

Hope for All People

“I’m ’round the corner from anything that’s real,
crossing the threshold of hope…”
–Modified U2’s “One Step Closer”

My mom gave me JPII’s “Crossing the Threshold of Hope” for Christmas, and though I’m only about a third of the way done with it, I am already planning on buying multiple copies of it to give to my atheist, [...]

Fatherhood’s Challenge

John Paul II speaks about the nature of paternity in a husband and father and maternity in a wife and mother, and of the special challenge that paternity brings with it:

Physically, a woman becomes a mother thanks to a man, while paternity in its psychological and spiritual aspects is the effect on a man’s interior [...]

Procreation and Love

More wisdom from JPII on marital sex and the need for it to be open to procreation of new life with God:

Fighting Off Impure Invasions

JPII perfectly describes what it is like when one is attacked by temptations to lust in “Love and Responsibility”. Read on for his insightful analysis and the ultimate solution to overcoming impurity in your life.

What Is This?

…St. Joseph’s Solemnity or something?

YES, it is!

With your fears of not being able to provide for your family:
Go to Joseph.
With your struggles with growing in chastity and being healed of sexual impurity:
Go to Joseph.
With your hopes of meeting the princess of Heaven whom God the Father has created just for you:
Go to Joseph!
For the strength [...]

Little Miracles

My family has been party to many small miracles in the last three days. God is so good!

Miracle number one: I have two newly delivered nieces, Ava Lynn Bateson and Addison Lynn Bateson. They were delivered Friday, via emergency C-section, at about 5p.

Sexual Shame Is a Good Thing!

What on earth does that statement mean? Isn’t shame bad? Believe it or not, shame is a good thing, when understood correctly. Karol Wojtyla (voy-TEE-wah is how I have heard it pronounced most frequently, though if anyone has a better phonetic, please let me know), better known as Pope John Paul II, [...]

Grapevine Clusters Up Close

I thinned some more grape clusters today on my vines, and meanwhile I took some pictures to show you what they look like up close. Imagine that our Lord can make these little green buds into flowers, then grapes, then wine, and, at Mass by the Holy Spirit’s power, transform wine into His Precious [...]

Subtle Indoctrination

A week ago I bought some biology and history textbooks because I wanted to really learn important things from school that I have now forgotten or only have vague recollections about.

One unexpected side effect of reading these books again is that I have realized how strongly yet subtly biased they are against God as the [...]

Oops, I did it again!

When I began the day this morning, I was serene and recollected. I had entrusted the day to the Holy Spirit and felt quietly happy. I, as a daughter of Our Lady, was prepared to meet the world.

Except, the world was too much for me. Again! And, now, at the end [...]

Cardinal Arinze Podcasts

Someone emailed me and asked if I would link to Cardinal Arinze’s podcasts. I didn’t have to think too much about it, since the Holy Spirit speaks so eloquently and clearly through him!

So check out the “fly” image on the right side of the page underneath the pictures of me and Katie and Gerardo [...]

Cluster Thinning on My Grape Vines

More grapevine excitement.

My two strongest grapevines are producing multiple clusters of buds (which will burst into flowers and then become grapes, God willing) on each shoot from the main branch.

Mary Beth Bonacci’s Experience in Single Life

I was surprised a few weeks back to find out Mary Beth Bonacci, the famous Catholic chastity speaker, is a single woman.

Katie confirmed it, and then today I read a great article she wrote on CatholicExchange.com explaining how she has fulfilled her call from God and the work he has chosen to do through her [...]

A Mama’s Little Cross

My oldest sister, Courtney, and her two wonderful sons, Adam and Nathan, are visiting our home this weekend. It’s so wonderful to spend time with them and witness the emerging personalities of my nephews; Nathan will be 3-years in May, and Adam is 2 months old. (Oops, Nathan just invited me to play [...]

Relearning History and Biology

I am disappointed to admit it, but I didn’t care much about actually learning things that my teachers taught me in school.

The problem was, God gifted me with a good memory and intelligence, so I didn’t have to study hardly any and still made excellent grades. Well, that was good and all, and I [...]

One-eyed Jacks

A tasty morning treat that even I couldn’t mess up!

Make hole in bread, put butter in frying pan, fry bread and crack egg in the center where hole is, flip, then fry the bread holes in the butter, too! Where’s Aunt Jemima when you need her (or Mrs. Butterworth’s?)–oh well, I had to settle [...]

Amazon.com in French + Devin = Comedy

I recently met a French woman at work, and the first thing that came to my mind was to ask her if she knew about St. Therese of Lisieux (my patroness).

However, I didn’t know quite how to bring it up, so since we just got to talk for a few minutes one day, I didn’t [...]

Chastity’s Power and Relation to Love

I read more incisive wisdom today from Jesus through John Paul II in “Love and Responsibility” (L&R). Let’s sit at the feet of the Master and learn from him…

What power does chastity have in a person?

The virtue of chastity, whose function it is to free love from utilitarian attitudes, must control not only sensuality [...]

Oh Don’t Worry, I’m Appalled

Have you seen the bumper stickers, usually black with white lettering, that have been created by some liberal organization to attack George Bush and conservative ideology (which has significant overlap with our Catholic values)?

There is an entire class of them, but the one that I saw on a car in my parish’s parking lot the [...]
