They are coming because we have ordered a hive of bees from the B. Weaver apiary!
Are we crazy? The short answer is “yes”. ![]()
Katie and I have both been fascinated by bees for a long time. They are incredible creations of our Lord: Their behavior, the hive dynamics, the at times beautiful and at other times brutal ways of these little creatures.
For example, fertilized eggs laid by the queen either become female worker bees (most commonly) or become future queen bees, but which one the larva becomes depends on what food it is given for the 6 days that it lives between hatching and metamorphosis.
Another cool fact: Bees are able to tell other bees where they found sources of pollen and nectar with such accuracy that another bee can fly there directly, even if an obstacle is put in the way, to a distance of several miles!
Finally, bees produce honey, a food which chemists have never been able to manufacture (or at least not sufficiently cheap-enough to undercut the bees’ efficiency in making).
This is just the tip of the iceberg about bees–we look forward to learning much more about them.
