Maybe, I Don’t Really Wanna Know…

…how your garden grows,
’cause I just wanna fly…
(Who else but Oasis could come up with such brilliant lyrics?)

Katie and I have started our garden!

It was tough digging up the ground and pulling out the grass by the roots, but we did it!  We encountered many of the gross white grub worms, which I thought were good for the soil, but Katie knew that they ate the roots of plants, so we started smushing them.

I loosened our very dense, clay-consistency dirt with a pitchfork and garden claw, then Katie came behind and pulled up the grass.  We threw the grass in the compost pile (behind Katie)–are we organic or what?  ;)

I bought a bunch of 40 pound bags of different soil additives, including composted cow manure, peat humus, and plain old potting soil, which helped thin the dirt a good bit.  I don’t really know what I am doing, but why let that stop us?

It felt great to be outside with Katie, working together on our first garden.  We got to talk a lot, laugh, and occasionally throw dirt at each other.   We had to keep shushing each other whenever we started talking too loudly about our BEES, since neighbors were about, and we don’t want them to get frightened.

Wednesday we are going to the store to buy vegetables and plant them!
