Katie and I have finally stopped trying to escape the truth: We are becoming about as Bohemian as you can get.

Why? Well, what do you think is missing for our backyard that already has a vineyard, a garden, a compost pile, and a hive of bees?

Chickens, of course!

So we have decided to buy a few hens for our backyard, primarily for their eggs, but also because they will munch on bugs in the garden and yard and be good pets.

We started laughing last night about how Bohemian we are becoming, but to me the logic is simple: I like to eat eggs, and so Katie buys eggs at the grocery store just about every week. Why not have a chicken or two ourselves that lay an egg a day? That’s about a dozen eggs a week–perfect!

Additionally, we usually pay more for the free-roaming chickens eggs because we don’t like supporting farms where the chickens are kept in tiny cages all day; well, our chickens will be free-roaming and probably even eat better than the store-bought free-roaming ones.

I checked the Austin ordinances on chickens, and we are within the law to buy a few chickens for our backyard, so the only thing we have to do now is get ‘em!  I am favoring the Buff Orpington breed because they look nice and are totally buff.

Just be sure Katie stays away until after the baby is born; chickens, esp. their waste (liquid and solid) are suppose to be dangerous to developing unborn babies. I would love to have our own hens, but we don’t have the yard to do so in this house. I am looking forward to building my raised gardening beds this fall though. Amy
