I have mostly ignored the hype around facebook and myspace, but those sites, as well as sites like digg.com, reddit.com, and del.icio.us (which are called “social bookmarking” sites, I have gathered), have reached incredible popularity.

I have joined del.icio.us and digg.com and have been trying them out to see whether they are useful to me.

One note about the sites: I was disappointed when I went to digg.com and reddit.com because many of the links that become the most popular due to people’s votes are links to vulgar or very derogatory material.

In case you don’t know how they work, what happens is people might read an interesting story on a webpage, or a cool blog post, and they will then vote for that link, which sends their vote to the social bookmarking site and lets others go read about it. If they like it, they will also vote for it, and if a site gets enough votes, it will show up on the main page (of digg.com or the others), so that all people will see it.

Unfortunately, this naturally leads to people with twisted hearts voting for evil sites, and so those often rise to the top–kind of the worst of human nature coming out. But the idea is pretty cool, I think, and not all of the links voted for are bad, most are morally neutral I would say.

So, my question is: Do you use any of the sites I referenced?

If so, what do you like best about them, or how are they useful to you?

  1. Hey Devin!
I use Facebook. At first I didn’t want to because I thought it was a waste of time, but my friends convinced me and since 80% of the people I know use it, I tried it out and now I like it!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen VERY bad ads…I don’t really pay attention to them.
You can see people’s pictures and videos etc. Oh, and Danielle Bean uses Facebook =P

  2. I subscribe to digg.com’s design and technology sections via my Google news reader RSS feeds. That way it’s easier to stay on top of this age of information overload. Good thing is that via the news reader I could first browse through virtually hundreds of headlines and read the article if only it catches my. The language in the comments section of digg.com is not of great taste, to say the least (inspite of profanity filter)

facebook is more of a social utility for keeping in touch with friends and for business networking. Otherwise, it’s worth ignoring. And for del.icio.us, I use to bookmark the sites that are interesting. I do not venture far from there.

The new technologies are great if used for something good. It’s easier to get sidetracked so limiting it’s use is vital to a better life.

Hey Devman!! I use Myspace and i really like it. i have been able to find old high school and college friends, and reconnect with them. i also keep in touch with former students which is fun. i just deny all the spam stuff and enjoy their pictures and funny blurbs.

  4. Hey Devin, I use Facebook mostly but I do have a myspace too. I use both just to catch up with old friends who are across the US. I really like facebook because you can upload many pictures and they really don’t let graphic material to come up. I don’t use Myspace as much because their filters aren’t as good.
