Don’t Call It a (Jesuit) Comeback…

…they’ve been here for years.
Ah, what can I say? I memorized lyrics from LL Cool J back in junior high school that will probably stay with me until the day I die.
Wikipedia has a good overview of the Jesuit order. The Society of Jesus is awesome, and I think that [...]

Iraqi Priest Tortured for Being a Christian

This story is horrible, but it hasn’t gotten much attention to my knowledge: An Iraqi priest was abducted by Islamic thugs and tortured for days.
We as Christians know the only answer to such hatred: Love.
How do we love such people, who hate us with unreasoning vehemence? Only with Christ’s help, for we believe that [...]

Newsflash: Don’t Listen to the Media

That’s my takeaway after following the media’s coverage of the two biggest primaries: Iowa and New Hampshire.
In Iowa, the media and even “university computer simulations” predicted Huckabaee to lose big time. Instead, Huckabee won!
On the Democratic side, Clinton was “unstoppable” before the primaries began, but then Obama won in Iowa!
What were we then told [...]

Three Fundamental Aspects of Being Human

Who is man? How do I know who I am and what the purpose of my life is?
These important questions are answered beautifully in Gaudium et Spes (Joy and Hope), an important document from the second Vatican council:

Man is the only creature that God willed, not as a means for anything else, but simply [...]

Attacking Barack Obama Would Be Like “Shooting Bambi”

Veteran journalist Sheila Liaugminas (Log-MEAN-us) caught a BBC news piece about American politics, specifically about Clinton potentially attacking Obama to climb back up in the polls.
This is one more reason I am glad we don’t have TV.
Sheila then links to Gerald at the Cafeteria is Closed blog and his post on Obama’s radical opposition to [...]

One, But Not the Same

Bono from U2 talks about the lyrics and meaning behind their hit song One, from the Achtung Baby album (”We’re one, but we’re not the same…”):
We had a request from the Dalai Lama to participate in a festival called Oneness. I love and respect the Dalai Lama but there was something a little [...]

Bono and His Wife, Ali

Bono, the lead singer of U2, says some beautiful things about his wife, Ali, in the book I bought, called U2 By U2.
Bono:
Ali is like a force of nature.  She is like a current that you don’t see until you are in the water….She doesn’t need me to be anything other than the person I [...]

Rosca de Reyes

We had a few friends over today, and in honor of Epiphany, I made a Rosca.  It was an adventure but turned out tastily enough.  Devin’s mother found the baby Jesus, which means that she has to throw a party for us on the Feast of the Presentation, February 2nd.
The Rosca recipe is below.  [...]

Happy Feast of the Epiphany

Catholics all over the world today celebrate the epiphany of Christ’s divinity to the Gentiles–that’s me.  It can be difficult to understand the import of this feast, considering that we’ve grown up in a “Christian” culture where everyone knows that Jesus is God. (At the very least, we can say that ours is a post-Christian [...]

Catholic Media Review

I received an email about a new site that is a group blog for movie and other media reviews, from a Catholic perspective.
I read several posts and think they are excellent!  It’s good that these faithful people are giving Steven Greydanus some help with reviews.

U2’s Honesty: The Pop Album

I bought a big book about U2 at the bookstore last weekend and have been devouring it.
The book takes you through the chronology of the band, breaking up each period in a separate section, which roughly equate to the albums they released and the tours.
The book’s format is just the band members’ stories and explanations [...]

Chicken Egg Update

I’ve still been keeping records of how many eggs our chickens are laying, and they have now laid about 250, so the total cost per egg is now less than $1.
Recent highlights in the chickens’ lives have been:
1. Learning they can eat honeybees
2. Being able to jump onto the 5-foot high compost pile by using [...]

Accused Priest Exonerated

Thanks be to God, Father Al Gondek, a priest accused of sexual abuse, was exonerated recently of all charges.
Fortunately, there were provable factual errors in the accusations made by the accuser, which claimed he was abused 47 years ago; for many priests, the accusations are just their word versus the accuser’s word, and people wrongly [...]

It Had to Be You Again

Katie and I had a blast last night at our parish’s New Year’s Eve dinner and dance!
I am not a skilled dancer, and one of the things I used to most dread was going to a dance; I feared being embarrassed in front of others, and since I had not taken dance lessons, I knew [...]
