I am going to give away an awesome moment in the true story of Immaculee in Left to Tell, so don’t read more if you want to read the book yourself, but there is one part where, near the end of the 3 months she and 6 other women had been hiding in a tiny bathroom, the killers came for them and were going to find them.

They had managed to hide in this bathroom off the main bedroom, with only a wardrobe to block the door’s outline from the killers who were tearing apart the bedroom to find them. They knew they were in there somewhere, and Immaculee prayed, as she had throughout the months, for God to save them, for why would he let them be raped and killed after protecting them from discovery for months?

The killers were about to find the door and Immaculee and the other Tutsi women knew they were done for, when Immaculee heard Christ tell her they were going to be alright, and just then a brilliant light shone around the door in the shape of the Cross. Immaculee got up and shouted for joy, with the killers only a few feet away on the other side, and the other women frantically motioned to her to be quiet and sit down, but she told them aloud they were going to be okay, for she could see that Christ was blinding the killers to the door’s presence miraculously.

After a few minutes, the Cross faded and the killers left without discovering them.

I’ve never seen a miracle like this before, but after reading this book, it is so completely believable when Immaculee describes this miracle that God did, because He had seemed to be absent the past 80 days, letting women, children, and even babies be literally ripped apart by their own people. He let them hide in miserable squalor, without bathing, without deodorant, without changing clothes, and continuously being pressed right up against each other for hour after hour every day for three months.

The miracles were far away from this place. Immaculee’s brothers and mother and father were slaughtered in cold blood, and the killers were finally closing in on them; there was no escape, and then Jesus came and put the Cross over the door, turning the minds of these twisted men away from it. It was that simple, lasted but a few moments, and was done, shown only to Immaculee, who had prayed for God to save her.

Miracles still happen today. If God wills, I hope to see one myself, but if it takes what Immaculee went through to be given this special grace, I will count myself blessed if I am not given the privilege during this life.

Praise be Jesus Christ, now and forever, amen.
