Flotsam and Jetsam
Posted by Devman under Entertainment, Technical
Here are some websites I have been using that I wanted to pass along:
- CatholicExchange.com: web portal, new articles each day, news headlines, etc.
- Pandora.com: free music supported by ads; you tell it which bands you like and it plays those bands and others like them (tip: some of the ads they show are immodest (not pornographic, but women in bikinis, etc., so I keep a separate web browser open to pandora and resize the window so the ads aren’t shown)
- Google Analytics: Web site traffic monitoring; I think J.R. Andrews turned me onto this one, and I have it monitoring blog traffic.
- iGoogle: This is my main homepage now, and I use the Google Reader widget on it that is an RSS reader for all the blogs I am interested in. I also have stock info, news items, my Google calendar, etc.
If you have any useful or fun sites, feel free to share them. If you are especially motivated, the way that you make hyperlinks using the (somewhat primitive) comment boxes on this wordpress blog is by typing this in: My Cool Site.

I’ve never tried Pandora. It seems very similar to finetune. I’ll second iGoogle, or anything on Google for that matter. The Street View feature on Google Maps has helped me familiarize myself with an unknown neighborhood before venturing out.

I’ll start off with Remember The Milk which is a task/list management site. Jenny and I use it to keep our grocery list so that I can access the list from work to know what to get on my way home. It can do more than just simple lists though and can even do recurring tasks and can map your tasks on a Google map. The mapping helps if you are trying make running errands more efficient to save gas or to plan around nap time.
Next up, I’ll through out the obligatory music service. I’ve been using Slacker. It’s free and one thing I like is that there is a desktop player download. Oops, does that disqualify it from the list?
Adding to the Google goodness, I’ll submit Picasa Web Albums, which is a photo/video sharing site. It’s easy to use and feature rich, including mapping photos and RSS feeds.
