Extracting Audio from DVDs

I am hoping that one of our faithful readers can offer me advice on extracting audio from DVDs that we own (i.e. movie DVDs).

I’ve done this process myself a few times now, and it is always painful.  Here is what I have done to accomplish it:

1. Use DVD Decrypter program to “decrypt” and copy the files from the DVD to the PC
2. Use Clier’s AC3 tool to extract the ac3 audio out of the VOB file
3. Use Clier’s AC3 tool to analyze the ac3 and then convert it to WAV
4. Listen to WAV using WinAmp or whatever and mark off the timeline where the music is you want
5. Use Audacity to slice up the WAV using the selection tool and copy the selections to a new Audacity project you create
6. Export as Mp3 and drink some tea.

I just spent a good hour and a half figuring out how to do this (again), though at least I wrote down the instructions this time, but does anyone know an easier way to do this on a Windows PC?

    Good morning, Devin -

About a week ago, I accidentally discovered a very simple way to do this with software from http://www.xilisoft.com. You can download a free, neverending trial that allows up to 5 minutes of file conversion. Simply select *wav as the destination format, and the program will extract just the audio portion of the source file. I’ve never purchased the software, as 99% of my home videos are in segments less than 5 minutes.

    Hope this helps -

    Hi Devin -

Just a quick postscript: I believe I used *wma as the format, not *wav. WMA is obviously strictly audio; I don’t know if WAV is.

I haven’t used it but it looks like MediaCoder would do the trick. It’s open source so that’s a plus. Or you could always just connect your line out to your line in and play the DVD and then record the section you wanted. It you might lose some quality but probably OK for most cases.

    “on a Windows PC”

Of course this is the part that makes your task difficult. :)

    I would do it thusly:

    a) Install MPlayer from:
    http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

    1) Watch the DVD to determine the title and the start and end time you want the audio from.

    2) Extract the audio:
mencoder dvd://{title number} -ss {start_time} -endpos {length_of_audio_in_seconds} -vc dummy -vo null -ao pcm:file=filename.wav

    3) Encode filename.wav to mp3 using Lame or Audacity if you require a GUI.

At the very least you can eliminate some steps from your original set by using the ‘Extract Selection to Mp3′ feature of Audacity instead of copying the selection to a new project.
