It was around 1990; I was 12 years old and like a lot of American children had grown up fearing the Soviets, Communism, and nuclear war, yet the Berlin Wall had come down and the Iron Curtain had torn in two.
Two songs bring back that time in my childhood: Scorpions’ Winds of Change is one of them. I had no clue where Gorky Park was or what the “Moskva” meant, but I loved listening to this song.
The other song was Jesus Jones’ Right Here, Right Now, which talked about “watching the world wake up from history.” It really struck home with me that life and things are not bound to stay as they are–they can improve and become better or get worse–depending on our human actions. In school we are fed facts and knowledge in such a way that it is easy to grow to think that “everything is known” or “what happens happens” no matter what we do, but that is not the case: God allows us to act and make decisions that radically affect others’ lives, for good or for ill.

Speaking of the Berlin wall, I would like to
recommend a documentary I saw on Showtime called \expelled: no
intelligence allowed.\. Ben Stein explores the repression of scientists who study ontelligent design. It is very interesting and makes a
comparison to the Berlin Wall and it’s implications for freedom. Excellent film!’
I love Winds of Change. Have you seen the movie In Search of a Midnight Kiss? It’s a nice cheesy romance movie which ends with all the characters spontaneously bursting into that song.
