Brent Stubbs and I are back at it again in this podcast, discussing the proper role of sports from the perspective of Catholic fathers. (iTunes podcast here.)
Both Brent and I were big-time jocks growing up, but did we play too many sports? Now that we’re fathers and Catholic, we reflect on our upbringing in this area and how we might bring better balance with our own children.
Includes:
- Lightning Apologetics Minute on the canon featuring syllogism from Tim Troutman of CalledToCommunion.com
- Inevitable Tim Tebow discussion and “Jesus Water”
- Dr. Taylor Marshall mention
- Legacy by Steve Woods recommended

I am pulling up the podcast now. Giants or Patriots?
Hhahaha! Well, we tried to avoid straight up commentary on teams and games, but I don’t have a dog in the Giants vs. Patriots fight.
Great discussion on Tebow. When I was an evangelical, I specifically paid attention to the post game interviews and would cheer whenever an athlete would acknowledge Jesus Christ for the win or a successful performance. I was disappointed when I didn’t hear athletes such as Michael Jordan, John Elway or Dan Marino explicitly or implicitly acknowledge Jesus Christ. I don’t know much about their personal faith now but they do have a Catholic background. But you’re right on how it’s so easy to judge by outward appearance.
I never like it when I hear atheletes praising Christ for the win (or touchdown, or whatever).
As if God has NO believers on the other team.
As if God cares which team wins.
I do believe He has much bigger fish to fry.
And what about the prayer closet? Open acts of piety remind me of the Pharisees.
